BRIERWOOD ENTRANCE SIGNS - New:

A total of six Brierwood Entrance signs have been installed, along with the landscaping. In addition, through the hard work of the landscaping committee, the original Brierwood entrance wall sign has been restored and returned to the Brierwood Community. The committee has added landscaping, which includes plants, lights and figurines.

Brierwood Community Signs
Lori N. Boyer,
City Council Member & City Council President.
"The Brierwood Neighborhood Association has undertaken a project to install signage at several entrances to the neighborhood to both identify the neighborhood and create a greater sense of community. Brierwood is located on both the north and south sides of Baymeadows Road west of Old Kings. The northern boundary is San Clerc Road and the area between San Clerc and Baymeadows was the original Brierwood community. The area south of Baymeadows was developed sometime later and Rathbone is the through street near the southern boundary of the community. The community, which once had its own pool and clubhouse, has an increasingly active neighborhood association, Neighborhood Watch committees and participates in the Southeast CPAC and Zone 3 SHADCO. I look forward to assisting with the signage project." - (Posted on March 7, 2012 by admin)

CAMP TOMAHAWK PARK

Many Brierwood residents may not be aware that we have a public park located about a mile from our BNA meeting location. The photos show aerial & ground level images as well as a map to the site. Enjoy!

PARK HISTORY: Octavio Garces, an instructor at The Bolles School, known as Captain O.S. Garces to his campers, and his wife Geraldine (Gerry) Garces established a private day camp on the site in the latter 1950’s known as Camp Tomahawk. The city later purchased the property from the couple in 1981 for use as a public park, subject to the stipulation that it be named for Mr. Garces’ father, Alejandro Garces. The neighbors principally wanted a passive park, and most of the grounds have been left in a natural state with a mature growth of oak, pine, and maple trees and a creek that extends through the middle of the tract to Goodbys Creek. And with help from the Mayor’s Council on Fitness and Well-Being, the Jacksonville Track Club, and numerous Eagle Scouts, the trails have been expanded and improved over the years. In Feb. 2007, the playground has been expanded to add a new playground climber. This piece of play equipment, a Satellite Climber, was won from BCI Burke at the National Recreation and Park Association Annual Conference in Seattle. It is the first of its kind to be installed in a public park in the United States.

"No Soliciting" Signs Are Available:
Orders have been taken for residents who would like one of these signs. They are 9" x 12" x .040" aluminum non-reflecting signs, white with red text. Production time is approximately. 7-10 business days. Price of the signs will be determined once orders are all placed, and will be based on the following quantities: 50 - $10.12 each, 100 - $8.77 each, 250 - $7.91 each, 500 - $7.50 each. The sign will appear generally as shown to the right:
NO

MUNICIPAL CODE
230-703
Rathbone Drive 4-Way Stop Signs:
The 4-way stop signs continue to be very effective in reducing the incidence of speeders on Rathbone, as well as helping to decrease the overall traffic volume. The signs helped to return Rathbone Drive to the Brierwood community as a residential street. We ask that all Brierwood residents obey the stop signs in our community, including those on side streets, as this sets an example to other residents, and visitors passing through Brierwood, that Brierwood residents are very serious about traffic safety in our community and in protecting our children from injury. It is difficult for us to expect visitors to obey the stop sign laws if we don't. Also, be aware that the fine for running a stop sign is $118.50 and that the police continue to actively give out both speeding and stop sign running tickets, from both marked and unmarked cars, even to Brierwood residents.
Brierwood Neighborhood Watch Program:
The Brierwood Neighborhood Association (BNA) began as a Neighborhood Watch program. This continues to be a very important and integral aspect of the BNA. We encourage all Brierwood residents to take the time to get to know their neighbors. By working together we can all help to reduce and eliminate any incidence of crime in our area.
(See meeting agenda below)

The Brierwood Neighborhood Association General Meeting is held each month on the 3rd Thursday of the month. There is often a guest speaker, who provides important and interesting information, from their area of expertise, for the residents of Brierwood. At the meeting residents are informed about important areas of interest to the community and are encouraged to offer suggestions that would further improve the quality of life in Brierwood. Police officers from the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, Zone 3, are present at times to provide updates on crime prevention and to answer any resident's question. The Mayor of Jacksonville has attended our meetings in the past. Also, our City Council Member, and members of her staff, often visit the meetings. Brierwood residents from various committees present their reports on topics such as:

Report from SHADCO monthly meeting, (Sheriff's Advisory Council)
Reports of any suspicious criminal neighborhood activity in the last month
Traffic Calming Committee report
Neighborhood beautification, holiday preparations, etc.

We look forward to seeing all of our fellow residents at the next Brierwood Neighborhood Association meeting! (Some of the accomplishments of the association.)

Note: The Brierwood Neighborhood Association is not a homeowners association and participation is voluntary.

REPORTING CRIMINAL ACTIVITY:
The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office (JSO) has informed all of the residents that it's very important to report any suspicious activity. JSO has a firm belief that it's better to prevent a crime from getting started, or stop a crime in progress, than it is to try to piece things together after a crime has already been committed and the perpetrators have left. Do not hesitate to call...Let's all help to insure that Brierwood is Crime-Free.
  1. Call 911 if you see a crime in progress.
  2. Call 630-0500 if you suspect a crime has been committed or would like to report something suspicious. (This is the police non-emergency number)

ACCOMPLISHMENTS:
The list below highlights some of the changes and improvements that your Brierwood Neighborhood Association has been able to accomplish with the support of residents, the Sheriff's Department, our City Council Member & President, Ms. Lori Boyer, and our Mayor, Mr. Lenny Curry. All of the individuals and organizations involved deserve our thanks and appreciation.

  2. The placement of "Curve" signs with a 25 mph speed limit to help reduce the speeding activity on Rathbone Drive.
  3. Increased police monitoring and ticketing of speeders on Rathbone Drive. In addition, the number of police monitoring Brierwood, in both marked and unmarked police cars, has been increased.
  4. The placement of Neighborhood Watch signs.
  5. The chaining of all fences on Runnymeade Road.
  6. The installation of a six foot fence at Baymeadows Road and Old Kings Road.
  7. JEA and UPS workers have been asked to report anything they see out of the ordinary in our neighborhood.
  8. Arranging of luminaries, and the placement of bows on street signs, during the holiday season.

Your Brierwood Neighborhood Association will continue to strive to make Brierwood one of the most sought after home developments in Jacksonville, FL.
